Custom Code or No-Code? Choosing How to Build Your Website

A practical way to decide between a coded site and a platform like WordPress, Shopify, or Framer. (4 min read)

Start with what the site has to do

A brochure site with a contact form has very different needs from a customer portal or a store with custom pricing rules. Write down what visitors must be able to do before you think about tools.

When no-code is the right call

Platforms like WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, and Framer are fast, affordable, and easy for your own team to edit. They suit most marketing sites and standard stores. You get a good result sooner, and you can change content without a developer.

When custom code is worth it

Choose custom code when you need logic a platform cannot do, unusual integrations, strict performance targets, or a web app with user accounts and dashboards. It costs more up front, but you are not limited by a template or plugin.

A simple rule of thumb

If the site mainly shows information and collects enquiries, start with no-code. If it is a product your business depends on, build it properly in code. When unsure, we usually suggest starting with the simpler option and moving to code only if you hit a real limit.
